How can I tell if a garage actually knows what they're doing with my car? (11 อ่าน)

I'm not a car person at all. I can check my oil and add windshield washer fluid, but that's about where my knowledge ends. So when I take my 2015 Lexus ES350 to a garage, I have no way of knowing if they're telling me the truth or just making things up. Last time I went for a simple oil change, the guy came out with a dirty air filter and told me it needed to be replaced. I said okay because what do I know? Later my friend looked at it and said the filter was actually fine and I probably got scammed. It makes me so frustrated because I want to take care of my car but I feel helpless against people who know more than me. Someone told me to look at the 800Sayara auto repair profile on a business listing site to see what other customers have said about their honesty and quality of work. I thought that might help but I still worry that reviews can be faked. For those of you who also don't know much about cars, how do you protect yourself? Do you bring a friend who knows more? Do you ask for old parts back? Do you get a second opinion on everything? I just want to find a mechanic I can trust so I don't have to feel anxious every time I drop off my car. Any advice for a non car person would be really appreciated because right now I feel like every garage sees me coming and rubs their hands together.
