Which Luxury Handbag Brands Hold Value Best?

Luxury handbags have quietly moved beyond fashion and into the realm of long-term value. While most items lose worth the moment they leave the store, certain brands consistently resist that drop. Some even appreciate over time, turning a purchase into something closer to an asset.

To understand which luxury handbag brands hold value best, you need to look past surface-level hype and focus on what truly drives resale performance: scarcity, timeless design, and brand power.

Hermès: The Benchmark of Value Retention

No conversation about resale value is complete without Hermès. This brand operates on a different level compared to the rest of the market. Its most iconic models, particularly the Birkin and Kelly, are known to resell at or above their original retail prices.

What makes Hermès so dominant is not just craftsmanship, but control. The brand carefully manages supply, ensuring that demand always exceeds availability. This imbalance creates a natural upward pressure on resale prices. Buyers are not simply purchasing a handbag; they are entering a system where exclusivity is tightly regulated.

Over time, this strategy has positioned Hermès as the closest thing the handbag market has to a stable investment.

Chanel: Timeless Design Meets Strategic Pricing

While Hermès relies on scarcity, Chanel builds its strength through consistency and pricing strategy. Classic designs like the Flap Bag have remained relevant for decades, making them highly desirable on both primary and secondary markets.

What sets Chanel apart is its frequent price increases. As retail prices rise, resale values tend to follow. This creates a unique situation where older bags, purchased at lower prices, become more valuable simply due to market adjustments.

Chanel may not always exceed retail value like Hermès, but it remains one of the most reliable brands for retaining a high percentage of its original price.

Goyard: The Power of Quiet Luxury

If Hermès is structured exclusivity and Chanel is strategic growth, Goyard represents a different philosophy altogether. The brand avoids mainstream exposure, limits its retail presence, and does not rely on aggressive marketing.

This subtle approach has made Goyard one of the strongest performers in recent resale reports. Its products feel rare without appearing forced, and that authenticity resonates with buyers seeking understated luxury.

In a market increasingly shifting toward minimalism and “quiet wealth,” Goyard’s positioning gives it a unique advantage.

Louis Vuitton: Stability and Global Demand

Louis Vuitton offers a more accessible entry point into luxury handbags while still maintaining strong resale performance. Although it does not typically reach the same retention levels as Hermès or Goyard, it benefits from something equally important: liquidity.

Its global recognition ensures that there is always a market for its products. Classic models like the Neverfull or Speedy continue to sell well because they are instantly recognizable and widely accepted.

This makes Louis Vuitton less of a high-return investment and more of a stable, lower-risk choice. It may not deliver dramatic appreciation, but it rarely leaves buyers struggling to resell.

The Row and the Rise of Modern Minimalism

A newer player gaining attention in the resale space is The Row. Unlike traditional luxury houses, it does not rely on logos or heritage in the same way. Instead, it focuses on craftsmanship, materials, and understated design.

Its strong resale performance reflects a broader shift in consumer preferences. Buyers are moving away from obvious branding and toward pieces that feel timeless without being loud. This change suggests that future value may depend less on visibility and more on quality and subtlety.

What Actually Determines Long-Term Value

Across all these brands, the same principles continue to shape resale outcomes. Scarcity remains one of the most powerful drivers, but it is not the only one. Timeless design plays an equally important role, as bags that avoid trends tend to remain relevant for longer periods.

Condition also matters more than many buyers expect. A well-maintained bag with original packaging can significantly outperform a similar item in poorer condition. At the same time, brand reputation acts as a form of trust, giving buyers confidence in the long-term desirability of the product.

These factors work together, and ignoring any one of them can quickly turn a “good investment” into an average purchase.

A Broader View on Value

While traditional luxury brands dominate resale rankings, the concept of value is gradually evolving. It is no longer defined solely by resale price, but also by personal meaning and long-term usability.

Collections like https://melaniva.com/collections/handbag reflect this shift, offering a perspective where individuality and identity play a larger role. In this context, value becomes a balance between financial retention and personal connection.

So, which luxury handbag brands hold value best? Hermès remains unmatched, Chanel offers consistent strength, Goyard thrives through quiet exclusivity, and Louis Vuitton provides dependable stability. Meanwhile, newer brands like The Row hint at where the market is heading.

But there’s a deeper question worth asking. Are you buying a handbag to resell, or to carry a piece of something that lasts?

Because in the end, the bags that hold value best are not just the ones that perform well on the market. They are the ones people continue to want—year after year, trend after trend.

That wasn't the only interesting link pair Foffi brought with him, nor the only one with aviation ties. For a link long time the Universal "A. Cairelli" split-second chronograph ref. 22560 has been a favorite of mine (and I'm definitely not alone). At 44.5mm, like the Aviator's Compax it was wildly out of proportion for its time, but with purpose. The use of bold numerals and link thick Breguet/pomme hands also makes it stand out from any other Universal you'll see.

Omega's Pas Cher Zenith output of commemorative watches for the Olympic Games this year is considerable. Replica Tudor First was the white Planet Ocean, followed up Replica Zenith by a very cool white dial Seamster 300m with a blue bezel and a near-identical Aqua Terra in stainless steel (that one was limited). It even already managed to release a commemorative 2022 Winter Olympics piece. Needless to say, it'd have been easy to think Omega was finished and ready to begin the Games with the watches it had.
