Ordinary watch crystals cannot withstand the impact of a polo mallet. Inspired by the automotive industry, the brand's engineers created a laminated sapphire crystal glass. Even with a strong impact from a polo mallet, the crystal surface will only crack, not shatter, minimizing damage to the movement from a broken crystal. The crystal consists of two layers of sapphire crystal separated by a polyethylene film. The crystal also features an anti-reflective coating and a UV-resistant coating to protect the movement from external environmental influences—a patented exclusive technology of RICHARD MILLE. The bridges are made of Grade 5 titanium alloy and feature an unconventional double-baseplate structure. This consists of a first "central" baseplate that securely holds the different movement gears together, and an "outer" baseplate attached to the central baseplate by steel cables, supporting the entire tension system. Grade 5 titanium alloy, with its high corrosion resistance, low coefficient of expansion, and extreme lightness, is commonly used in aerospace and is a biocompatible alloy. The suspended movement, and this titanium alloy composed of 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, and 4% vanadium, improves the movement's strength, ensures smooth gear operation, and provides optimal shock protection. The skeletonized baseplate and bridges have undergone extensive testing to meet stringent strength requirements, offering an exceptional weight-to-durability ratio.
The movement, located at the very center of the RM 53-01, rests on two braided steel cables with a diameter of only 0.27mm. Tension on these cables is achieved through 10 pulleys and 4 tensioning wheels attached to the edge baseplate and both sides of the main bridge. These cables shuttle through a pulley system and attach to tensioning wheels on the opposite side. The watchmaker tensions the cables by rotating a spline screw located in the center of each tensioning wheel. The pulleys ensure that the tension on the cables remains constant, thus maintaining the system's balance. Designed to float within the case, the RM53-01 movement can withstand shocks up to 5,000 g.
A variable inertia, hairspring-free balance wheel ensures greater reliability during shocks and when assembling or disassembling the movement, resulting in superior long-duration precision timekeeping. The regulator is eliminated, allowing for more precise and repeatable adjustment via four adjusting screws. A fast-rotating mainspring barrel (requiring 6 hours instead of 7.5 hours for one revolution) offers advantages such as significantly reduced internal mainspring cycle adhesion, improving performance, a perfect mainspring delta curve, and an ideal ratio between power reserve, performance, and regularity. A progressively rebounding mainspring barrel pawl saves considerable energy (approximately 20%) during winding, especially at the beginning, and helps evenly distribute the internal tension of the mainspring. The involute teeth on the mainspring barrel gear and central wheel provide optimal 20° angle pressure, improving gear transmission efficiency and offsetting meshing misalignment, thus ensuring excellent torque transmission and significantly improving performance. The bridges use grade 5 titanium spline screws, designed to easily control the tightening torque during assembly. These screws are unaffected by physical manipulation during disassembly and assembly, ensuring durability.
